Haxtun
History
Name: Haxtun
Location: Phillips County
Colorado
Type: Ordinary Chondrite H/L4 Or L4
In August of 1975, a single weathered stone weighing 15.5 kilograms was
plowed up in a wheat field. It was found to have highly anomalous characteristics
with an intermediate type faylite, H-type pyroxenes and L-type cobalt in kamacite.
Dr. Rubin of UCLA consequently classified Haxtun as the world's first equilibrated
H/L intermediate chondrite. Bulk analysis indicates a possible link with the l-group
chondrites, hence the "or L4" portion of the Meteoritical Bulletin listing. The highly
weathered character of this stone makes this link uncertain.
This meteorite was published in the Meteoritical Society Bulletin No. 75
