Indochinite tektites are the best known of the tektites, classic
teardrop and cigar shapes are found in rice paddies throughout the
Thailand, Laos and Vietnam areas. At one time, these stones were
believed to have originated on the moon, when meteoric impacts
approximately 750,000 years ago blasted out lunar material which
liquefied under the intense pressure and heat. The material solidified
in the vacuum of space, normally stretching out into spinning dumbbells
which separated into two teardrop shaped forms as they cooled. Their
trajectory sent them toward Earth where they rained down on Thailand
and Viet Nam. These tektites are the most recent; others date as far
back as 14 million years. Another and more reasonable theory about
tektites is that they are formed when a huge meteorite collides with
the earth with such force that melted rock and meteoritic fragments are
thrown at high speeds into the upper atmosphere. Here they cool and
harden, preserving their splashed, melted shape. Tektites are found in
areas that often our thousands of miles apart.
