Norton County
History
Name: Norton County
Location: Norton County
Kansas
Type: Achrondrite, Ca-Poor. Aubrite, AUB
On February 18, 1948, many Midwest residents saw a fireball
explode. It sent meteorite material across Norton Co., Kansas,
and Furnas Co., Nebraska, covering an area approximately 20 mile
long. Over 100 stones have been recovered. Including one that
weighed about a ton making it one of the largest stones meteorites
ever found. Another piece that was recovered weighed 131.5 Lbs.
This meteorite, which is a friable (easily crumbled), lime-poor enstatite
achrondrite with some nickle-iron inclusions, appears almost white.
This meteorite was never published in the Meteoritical Society Bulletins.
